Olympic Freestyle Coaching
Our coaching team brings years of experience across competing, coaching, and supporting athletes at all levels. You’ll be learning Olympic Freestyle Wrestling—One of the world’s oldest sports and a cornerstone of the original Olympic Games.
We focus on building strong fundamentals through drills, games, and live training—helping you improve while keeping sessions engaging. Most importantly, we’re about manaakitanga, making sure everyone feels valued and part of the team.

COACHES
Pete Pouri-Lane
Pete began wrestling at age 12 at the Waikeria Village Wrestling Club. His coaching journey started when the Hamilton Hawks needed a coach, and he stepped up without hesitation. Pete was the NZ National Coach for 9 years, and attended countless international competitions and training camps, notably the 2024 Olympic Games.
Known for his adaptable style, Pete balances athlete input with structured guidance depending on the level. His focus is always on creating a safe, positive space where athletes can grow and develop a love for wrestling. Pete now sits on the NZOWU Board as the Director of Technical.
Brian Roche
Brian Roche has had an extensive career in wrestling both as an athlete and coach. He began wrestling at the age of 5 for the Waikeria Village Wrestling Club. As one of Hamilton Hawks coaches for the past 12 years, Brian has shared his wealth of knowledge with the athletes, helping them grow into great wrestlers! Brian has also branched out into the technical side of wrestling as one of the Technical Officials for Wrestling NZ and is now an Official with UWW. He is responsible for running the Arena program at all competitions.
Koria Pouri-Lane
Koria began wrestling at the age of 7. She began coaching while she was still competing at the age of 17 which helped her grow both her own skills on the mat while giving back to the club. Koria has competed at many National and International Level competitions, ranging from Australia Cup, Oceania Championships and the Senior World Championships. Koria has her UWW Level 3 coaching certificate and is currently the highest qualified UWW coach in New Zealand She has a wealth of knowledge to share from her own wrestling background as well as her graduate studies. Koria now sits on the NZOWU board as the Director of Promotions.
